NASA and Nokia are taking 4G into space
  + stars: | 2024-04-24 | by ( Jack Bantock | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
That’s the shared vision of NASA and Nokia, who have partnered to set up a cellular network on the Moon to help lay the building blocks for long-term human presence on other planets. A SpaceX rocket is due to launch this year — the exact date has yet to be confirmed — carrying a simple 4G network to the Moon. The 4G network unit is being built by Nokia’s Bell Labs using a range of off-the-shelf commercial components. Images of ice — transmitted back to the lander and then Earth in near real-time via the cellular network — would be a world-first. NASA selected Bell Labs as part of its Tipping Point initiative, a series of partnerships with companies to develop technologies for future missions that puts them in prime position for key roles in the future space economy.

It’s a Golden Age for Shipwreck Discoveries. Why?
  + stars: | 2024-03-23 | by ( Michael Levenson | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Some were fabled vessels that have fascinated people for generations, like Endurance, Ernest Shackleton’s ship that sank in the Antarctic in 1915. No matter their place in history, more shipwrecks are being found these days than ever before, according to those who work in the rarefied world of deep-sea exploration. He added: “We’re in a transitional phase where the true period of deep-sea and ocean exploration in general is truly beginning.”So what’s behind the increase? Shipwreck hunters are also looking for wrecks for their historical value, rather than for sunken treasure. And climate change has intensified storms and beach erosion, exposing shipwrecks in shallow water.

The IM-1 mission's landing helps catapult the US into a 21st-century space race to the moon's south pole. AdvertisementAn American moon lander touched down on the lunar surface for the first time in over 50 years on Thursday. For its last lunar landing attempt in January, NASA partnered with the Pittsburgh-based company Astrobotic Technology to send its Peregrine spacecraft to the moon. Intuitive Machines' Odysseus moon lander beamed back its first images from space earlier this month. So NASA and Intuitive Machines have officially put the new commercial lunar era in swing, and they're just getting started.

Intuitive Machines mission control reported that it was receiving pings from the lander, which means it touched down at about 6:24 p.m. Intuitive Machines' Odysseus moon lander beamed back its first images from space earlier this month. Intuitive MachinesNASA has several CLPS missions scheduled over the next two years, including two more with Intuitive Machines. And it’s not just the winds making the waters rough – the Drake is basically one big surge of water. We’re not gambling.”Even with that extra safety margin, though, he admits that crossing the Drake can be a hairy experience. AdvertisementDanger at the lunar south poleArtemis III plans to land astronauts near the moon's south pole , which contains water ice, among other vital resources. Even small tremors at the moon's south pole could trigger landslides, according to a NASA press release, which may be dangerous to astronauts. Asteroids and comets have also broken up the lunar surface, Nicholas Schmerr, a co-author on the study, said in a statement . Astronaut James B. Irwin, lunar module pilot, works at the Lunar Roving Vehicle during the first Apollo 15 lunar surface extravehicular activity (EVA). The setback will likely also delay NASA's later missions and the agency's aspirations to build a permanent base at the moon's south pole.

Instagram posts — which often showcase trips to Antarctica — may have given expedition cruising more publicity, but this form of cruising isn't new. Today, there is stiff competition among expedition cruise lines to launch more technologically advanced vessels and to secure onboard talent. Source: Aurora ExpeditionsNoah Brodsky, chief commercial officer of Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic, described expedition cruising as the "breakout travel trend of the decade." Expedition cruising is also a good option for the growing number of solo travelers. "Unfortunately, this has meant the new expedition cruise ships have become larger and the expedition experience itself has been sacrificed," he told CNBC.

4G internet is set to arrive on the moon later this year
  + stars: | 2023-03-28 | by ( Ryan Browne | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
Nokia hopes to install a data network on the moon sometime in 2023, an executive told reporters. Nokia is preparing to launch a 4G mobile network on the moon later this year, in the hopes of enhancing lunar discoveries — and eventually paving the path for human presence on the satellite planet. The network will be powered by an antenna-equipped base station stored in a Nova-C lunar lander designed by U.S. space firm Intuitive Machines, as well as by an accompanying solar-powered rover. The infrastructure will land on the Shackleton crater, which lies along the southern limb of the moon. Nokia says the technology is designed to withstand the extreme conditions of space.
‘The Ship Beneath the Ice’ Review: Endurance Found
  + stars: | 2023-02-10 | by ( Michael O Donnell | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
One of the best adventure books ever written begins with a failure. “The order to abandon ship was given at 5 p.m.” So opens Alfred Lansing’s “Endurance” (1959), the definitive account of Ernest Shackleton’s 1914 attempt to sail to Antarctica and cross it on foot. The eponymous ship was trapped in ice for nine months and eventually sank after being crushed by the pack. But in the Antarctic—here was a burden which challenged every atom of his strength.” His leadership and willpower kept the men’s resolve intact through months of suffering, yet his optimism faltered after the loss of the Endurance. In his diary, Shackleton recorded the ship’s sinking and then the simple line, “I cannot write about it.”
WELLINGTON, New Zealand — New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern appeared awestruck Thursday to be standing in the Antarctic hut of explorer Ernest Shackleton. “I think when you’re a kid and you read stories about Shackleton, you’d never imagine you’d have the opportunity to come. So, I feel pretty lucky,” she said from inside the hut that was built more than a century ago. Conservationists say new marine protected areas and rules to prevent overfishing in Antarctica are desperately needed, but that Russia could use its veto-like powers to once again block progress. The motivation for Russia, which did not respond to requests for comment this week, remains unclear.
